We did most of our driving on electric power and were able to recharge from a 110V household power overnight fully. The Volvo’s cabin is roomy, comfortable and tastefully designed for a relaxed vibe. In a week driving the XC60 Recharge Ultimate we found it displayed near perfect balance of speed and comfort. Despite the emphasis on performance, the XC60 fuel economy numbers are some of the best average of it competitive set. Each powertrain is quick, its factory-supplied 0-60 numbers generally outpacing the competitive set. Additionally, the T8 in the XC60 Recharge PHEV combines the B6’s engine with a pair of electric motors and an 18.8 kWh battery. Power comes from either the B5, a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a 48-volt mild hybrid boost or the B6, the same engine with a turbocharger and a supercharger. Though most manufacturers in this segment work within the same design constraints, Volvo manages to ensure its core identity shines through. Lexus has a gasoline engine and two standard hybrid options. Audi and Lincoln offer PHEVs in addition to traditional gasoline engines, but BMW discontinued its X3 PHEV in 2021.
